Unusual bonding time activities

Ah bonding time. Everybody has different take on this and we can argue all day what quality family time means. Do we always have to stuck into meaningful conversation about some sophisticated matters or our kids just need our full attention or maybe we must have fun together?

I’d like to think that the last two are the ones that matter. Remember the saying: people will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you make them feel!

I want to make my son feel special. I want us to engage in fun activities just for us, the father and son.

So maybe you will be amazed if you hear that one of those activities is shaving our heads every month or so. Frankly I am not a big fan of going to a barber. Not that I don’t have the money but that I want to save myself the trouble of calling ahead of time and then driving back and forth. I used to have an old pair of clippers and my wife used to help me with the areas I was not able to reach.

Years passed by and so did my old trusted Andis. It was high time I got a replacement. Having seen me clipping my own hair for years, my son asked if I could give him the same haircut. Sure I said, just let’s see what mommy will say. With the go ahead of mommy, we prepared for shaving. Apart from the Wahl hair clippers I also got the Andis T-outliner – deemed the ultimate hair edgers for barbers. Having the right tools is crucial and after the shopping we got home and started with our little family affair.

We didn’t want to make a mess in the sparkling clean bathroom, so I got a chair and just put it outside.

I clipped his hair – nothing fancy – #3 on the top and #2 around the head. Little clipping with the liner around the ears and on the back of the head and what a difference it made! He loved his new hairstyle. Being proud of myself, I asked him if he would like to cut my hair and he agreed. He only needed a little help from my wife for the area around the ears and did the rest himself. I’m so proud of him!

We will definitely be shaving our heads the next month, too!…

Basketball: Our Father–Son team’s new hobby

December 9, 2016 sscomm 0

Jr. and I spend a lot of our time live streaming. We both love it and it is a wonderful bonding activity we both look forward to. However, we wanted to try something different. A lot different.

We tried a couple of other sports like football and baseball, but it just not OUR thing. I’ve almost given up, when Jr. suggested I join him for a basketball game with his friends. We’ve played for a couple of hours and truly enjoyed it. I was hooked.

It felt great to be playing with my son. Next week we gather again and did a really good game.

We even set up a mini basketball court in the basement to play every now and then. Last week we went shopping and got a portable basketball hoop. We attached it to the wall in the basement. We cleaned the basement from the old stuff I have gathered. It is amazing how much trash I was able to accumulate in just 4 years, even though I try to steer clear from stockpiling unnecessary things. We spent like 4 hours throwing stuff away.

While we were in cleaning mode, we also cleaned the backyard from the garbage, fallen leaves, few older hoses and steel plates, left from another project. It is not too big, just a mini basketball court, but it is more than enough so we can play whenever we decide. Every now and then we will be joining his friends for a full blown play, but most of the time our new court will be used.

I decided to surprise my son and buy him a present for his birthday next week. Naturally, the first thing that I thought of was basketball. So I got him a pair of Nike basketball shoes, new vest and shorts, and a brand new Wilson Evolution indoor basketball. The wife agreed that will be an awesome present for him, as we were really struggling those last two year to pick him something he would like and actually use.

When he was a 9 years old, he was invited to the birthday party of one of his friends. I asked him what present we should get his friend. His friend was training karate, so naturally, I was thinking about getting him a pair of karate gloves or protectors. Junior did not agree. ‘No!’ – he said. ‘We must not get him something he needs. His parents would have to buy it anyways. Let’s get him something he would like.’

Now I knew my son would like his present. It did fit his philosophy. Something he does not actually needs, but something he would enjoy.

Will keep you posted whether I was right.…
